Online Work: How Do You Explain it to Others?

Well yes, I agree that it is no one else's business if you do not want it to be. But if someone asks, and I am not ashamed, I am going to tell them. It is not a matter of justifying it or myself to anybody. I just simply explain to them what I do and how much I earn, and sometimes how much they can earn if they begin to do the same kind of online work that I do.

Most people that I tell about this, either begin online work to start bringing in some extra cash, or they are just astounded that there are actually legitimate ways to make money online. It is pretty cool seeing their reactions.

That's great for you, but a) I am big on boundaries and don't discuss this sort of thing in general with people and b) where I live working and online do not go together. Most people see the Internet as strictly for recreation and even though I am a writer and have been paid decent money at times online, it's still no one's business as far as I am concerned.

I have interacted with a lot of people from different countries on various sites who have come under criticism for the time they spend online. I just feel that what you do and how you live has nothing to do with other people.

I was not attacking you in my last post, but you seem to be sensitive since I disagreed with you about women not getting along, even though most of the people that I talk to about it both online and offline share my same opinion. Get a grip will you?

A lot of the people I have told have begun to earn money online too, and don't see it as the taboo that you seem to think it is. It is earning money. Anyone that has a problem with that and judges you for working online, doesn't seem like they are worth your breath in the first place.

First, I don't spend that much time online trying to earn money because it just isn't cost effective so my methods wouldn't help anyone who is already doing that. Second, if you can share your opinion so can I. Taking my comments personally and asking my age is not only ridiculous it is immature.

You were the one to take my comments personally first, with you gratuitously snappy tone. I did not snap at you in my previous post either. I was just genuinely asking you your age, because I was curious to know why you were behaving the way that you were. That is all. Your methods perhaps would help people. Every little bit helps and what may not help for you, may really help someone else. You just never know. Spread the knowledge. Only fear will hold us back.

Tell me about it! Whenever someone hear I work online I feel they think I'm unemployed, but saying I'm working online jut to hide that fact. That's why I avoid talking about that, because I don't need more awkward question about I do and dont do online. I work online and sometimes I end up working even 14 hours a day... just to make ends meet at the end of every month.

To be honest I'd prefer to get an office job, because at least then you know when you are going to have a break. I mean, you go to work, you finish your shift and from that point on you can do whatever you want. That's not the case for most of us... Id kill to be able to watch TV for at least 1 hour without having to worry about my writing tasks.

I do not think that you have anything to explain though firstly. But I also believe that the ‘upcoming generation’ is going to have a much better understanding of what it means to complete all your work online. And if they are really dense and still do not understand, just tell them you are a freelance worker.

Well, to be fair, I know a lot of people who do office jobs or any other jobs and they are spending their time goofing off online, on facebook and reddit and other such portals any time they have a dull moment and a few dozens spare minutes. But that's more commonly accepted because people think, well at least they went through the trouble of commuting to work and have to endure boss and colleagues!

If you just do it comfortably, people have trouble seeing it as work.

I am writing a book series so I try not to be online too much as it is a distraction, but online work is good for taking a constructive break. These days more people do online work casually, but it is seen as unskilled and the pay can reflect that. I don't tell people that I do it, but that I do use sites that are PTC or survey sites as many people do these anyhow linked to their loyalty store cards.

A lot people question my online work and to be honest I don't blame them, because I lost my real online job last year, and am still struggling to find a similar one (working on that tho), so for now I do what I can to make ends meet at the end of every months. That includes completing smalls tasks online and so on.

But even when I had a really good online job, I still got some weird looks when I told people I worked completely online! Oh yeah, some people looked at me like they didn't believe me, they seemed to kinda come to grips with the idea once I elaborated a bit more.

To be honest I no longer care what they think about me, but there is one question I totally hate and unfortunately used to get a lot back then (and still do from time to): Do you make enough to support yourself? It was annoying then and it's still annoying now! Sad part is... I'm having a hard time supporting myself now, I owe some cash to my parents, but hopefully soon all will change. I'm working very hard to get a really good job soon. Hopefully education is indeed the key!

I usually don't try to explain. People don't seem to understand and do think that all we do is surf. I don't understand why though because sitting in front of the computer is pretty difficult on it's own. I'm 21 so when I tell people that I work online everyone just assumes that I'm lazy and that I'm not doing anything at all. It's pretty frustrating, but I've started to not care. It really is not anyone's business what I do or how I do it. I just tell them I have a job, and if they ask anything else, I tell them I don't want to get into it and change the subject. I'm pretty hot-tempered so it works pretty well for me that people are afraid to annoy me

Welcome to the team! Kudos to you for stopping to feel like you need their validation or something. The nerve of some people, heh! To be honest I also no longer care if people think I do nothing or if I am lying when I say I work online. Most people seem quite surprised when I say I work online, they seem amused and intrigued, it's like a mix of those emotions plus disbelief. Quite odd if you ask me.
