Online Work: How Do You Explain it to Others?

I always get this doubting look if I tell someone how i earn money so i generally keep quiet about it. Some people just do not believe that you can earn online, so I just say that I freelance and do not go into explanations. Many people think i do not work because they see me around at home during "office hours" but yeah...i just say that I am self-employed as they 'get' that.

You're so lucky you found something like that on oDesk. I was on there a while ago and the pay for most projects were so low it was insane.

Yes, I was told about it by someone on a message board I used to frequen. Applied on a whim and got the job. I am very fortunate.

I had a similar experience with Mechanical Turk (Amazon). 99% of the jobs on there pay nothing. But I was lucky and found a company that pays around $11 an hour.

I sometimes work online but I never explain it to others. My parents wouldn't understand it anyway since the like criticizing everything I do and my loved ones already understand that I have to work like this so there is no need for explanation:)

I don't really tell many people about my work. My hubby knows but that's only because there was a span of a few months where everything I made online put food in our bellies. I still work online but now I make more, its still not enough for hubby to stop driving, but its enough to pay double on all our debt payments each month.

As for what I do tell others, if they ask, I say that hubby's income is enough for us & that I don't need to work. Besides homeschooling 3 kids & caring for the house is enough work for me right now!

Woohoo! That's pretty impressive actually!

Wow, yeah, homeschooling and homemaking takes up enough time/energy. I'm surprised you're able to manage working online that much, too!

My biggest problem is that people seem to think that because I am home that when they call and need something or they plan to stop by that I can't possibly have something I am doing. That is when I have the hardest time is when they just come over like I have nothing to do and am looking for something to do.

My family knows that I work at home and they don't fully understand it. My household - the honey and kids understand and respect it. But other family members just cannot grasp it no matter how many times I tell them!

People are always surprised when I tell them that I work online from home. One of the reasons why I feel like the people that I tell look at me that way when I tell them, is because i was always the smart one, with a bright future out of all of my siblings. I aced the grade 5 spelling test when the teacher accidentally gave me the wrong spelling test in grade 4, and people just expected me to go off to university and all of that. But no... I work online instead.

BUT, the truth of the matter is that those who work online often work just as hard for their money, if not harder. There are days when I spend four hours working online, and other days when I am online ALL day.

Another reason why people act shocked when I tell them that I make money online, is because they didn't think that it was possible to make decent money online. People who don't work online and aren't looking for ways to earn money online, often only hear about the online money making scams.

I don't mind those reactions though.

I avoid going into detail about it honestly. I usually say that I freelance. I will tell them that I write for various sources, for example. If they push for more, I'll throw out terms like "social media expert" or "search engine optimization specialist" even when it's not true or exaggerated because they don't know what it means. It goes over their heads and it sounds important enough that they don't judge too much.

I do the same thing! Baffle them with big words that they don't understand - that's my preferred method! T0 be honest, I don't really tell anyone about it. I guess if it was what I was doing full-time then it would be different because people would probably question what I was doing all day, but because I do it part-time and fit it around my full time job I don't really have to tell anyone about it. Which suits me.

I don't explain it. It's no one's business and I don't have to justify it. I have been writing articles as a free-lancer since long before there ever was an internet. People didn't see it as "real" work back then and not a lot has changed now. None of those people pay my bills and they don't get a vote on how I spend my time.

I have had this issue as well. I recently told someone that I would go half on a hotel room because I wanted to accompany them on their expedition. They stated, "oh, I forgot you work online." People really think that I sit at home and do nothing or make $1.00 per day. It is quit annoying, especially when I say that I am in the midst of renting an apartment they seem shocked. Now, I don't bother explaining because I will let my material things speak for itself. I am doing a lot better than those who flip burgers for a living. My friends who work at restaurants are always doubting my online job--it makes me question our friendship because of how rude and disrespectful they are.

Well yes, I agree that it is no one else's business if you do not want it to be. But if someone asks, and I am not ashamed, I am going to tell them. It is not a matter of justifying it or myself to anybody. I just simply explain to them what I do and how much I earn, and sometimes how much they can earn if they begin to do the same kind of online work that I do.

Most people that I tell about this, either begin online work to start bringing in some extra cash, or they are just astounded that there are actually legitimate ways to make money online. It is pretty cool seeing their reactions.
