I'd have to agree that a lot of young women shave to avoid being made fun of, but me myself, I just shave because I think it looks nice. I don't shave too often though, my husband doesn't care if I shave or not, he'll touch up on my legs either way, but when I go out in a skirt or shorts I feel prettier when I'm clean shaven.
To join in on the conversation of waxing, I've tried it a few times and though it's not specifically painful, I don't think it's really the right choice for me, or for anyone who waxes me. I seem to have very sensitive skin and I always bleed when I get waxed, no matter where it is, though it's the worse along my bikini area. It really is unfortunate because it seems easier than shaving and I would like my hair to grow back less.
