If you already practise yoga it will be a good exercise to continue with during pregnancy, with the necessary modifications as you get bigger. Talk to your instructor about how much is sensible to do; if unsure, he or she will probably be able to refer you to someone with more expertise. As long as your yoga teacher is experienced and properly qualified, you should be fine.

For those wishing to find some form of gentle exercise during pregnancy, specially designed yoga classes for pregnant women are an excellent form of antenatal exercise. The combination of stretching, relaxation and gentle exercise is particularly suitable. Finding a yoga class or teacher who is experienced in organising classes for pregnant women may be possible through your midwife, local branch of the National Childbirth Trust or the British Wheel of Yoga.

Yoga is wonderfully helpful in teaching you to focus attention on your posture throughout pregnancy. It encourages strength and suppleness, and correct breathing. In addition, breathing exercises and meditation are especially useful for reducing muscular and emotional tension, and promoting relaxation and positive health. Many of the yoga poses, adapted to your pregnant state, have therapeutic properties. A number of pregnancy ailments can also be alleviated by yoga, including constipation, heartburn, morning sickness, backache and the pain of labour.
