This book seems to be EVERYWHERE lately. They even spoofed it on SNL. A friend of mine said it's not that great as far as the writing goes, but it's so popular - is it only because of the sexual nature or is it really good? Or do you think people are just curious about it? Would love to hear your thoughts!

I've heard about this book. I understand that it started out as a fan fiction and that it contains graphic description of BDSM. I don't think it's the kind of book that I will read but it's in the best sellers' list, if I'm not mistaken. And the author, E.L. James had already signed to make the book into a movie. This is going to be another Twilight, I predict.

Yes, it IS everywhere. Half of the girls in my office are reading at the moment. We call it 'mama porn' because it seems to be particularly popular with women who have kids in primary school!

I haven't read it yet, but I'll give it a whirl. I've heard reports that it's filthy and others that say they don't know what the fuss is about. It clearly depends on how broad minded you are, I think...;)

I've also heard about this book everywhere, from the news to the radio. I think it started out as a Twilight fan fiction or something like that. I haven't read it and from the description and things I've heard about it I don't think I'll be picking it up either. BDSM is not my type of thing. I think it's popular right now because people are curious about it. They are obviously going to check it out to see what the hype is all about.

I've read all three of them because it seems that EVERYONE is reading them so I thought I had to. It's a decent story but really not that well written.

The Twilight trilogy wasn't that well-written either but look at how much money it had made the writer. I think nowadays, it's not about how well-written a book is to make it to the best seller's list but rather how much the writer can appeal to the women who make up most readers.

You are so right UmiNoor. The twilight series was not well written either but everyone loved it! It can still be a good story without being well-written but hen I find myself thinking just how much better it could it be.

I haven't read the Twilight books but according to my daughter, it's so badly written and since it's in the horror genre, even Stephen King bashed the book saying that it's the worst written horror book he's ever come across. It does make me curious to read the book though.

I don't even consider Twilight a horror series. Maybe the horror is that the writing was so terrible!
Yes, it's certainly horrifying how the book was written, I suppose. But based on watching the movie (I just saw the first one only), I can't imagine a sparkly vampire! That is one of the things that I find so hilarious about Twilight. Perhaps it should be placed in the comedy genre. I haven't read Shades of Grey but if most of it is about BDSM, I don't thing it's the kind of book that I will read.

I began reading 50 Shades on the internet when in the original Twilight fanfiction version. I only got about a third of the way through it before I had had enough because not only was the writing terrible but the main character was annoying. As it was so popular I thought that the "real" version must be much better so I bought it but to be honest it wasn't!

I can't understand why it's so popular! It claims to be "mommy porn" but the actual sex scenes aren't particularly good and even though there is a bit of bondage it isn't exactly gripping stuff. I was expecting something really kinky and was a bit disappointed! I think my main problem with this book is the same problem I have with Twilight in that the main female character is manipulated easily and is willing to do anything for the man she loves. I honestly think that Anna should grow a backbone and tell Christian to stick his contract where the sun don't shine!

I coudl not have said it better myself!

Thanks! I'm glad I'm not the only one not completely smitten with Mr Grey. I've always thought the color Grey was fairly boring and I've not changed my mind since reading this drivel. I much rather have a leading man who actually allows you to bite your lip and roll your eyes without threatening to hit you. It's not normal and isn't a healthy relationship to have.

No, I haven't read the book. I'm not sure if it's my cup of tea. I wish I had written it. The author is a millionaire because of the books series.

I work in a book store, we've sold so many its unbelievable! no one ever predicted that it would be a best seller.
I've read all three, I was taken aback i must admit with all the sex scenes and how detailed they were... but i was more interested in the romance of the two characters. As most romance novellas carry two characters that seemingly part at the end whereas this particular trilogy caught my attention quite quickly.

All in all, an easy read. I wouldnt let a 15 year old read it but we can only warn customers of the explicit content, we can not decline the purchase.

I've told many of the customers i sell this series to, to actually read the first one either borrow off a friend or read online just because some may find it less appealing then originally thought and its a waste of money buying the whol series and realising that all the gossip and hysteria about it was a waste of time.

And now their are various authors coming out with their own spontaneous novellas of soft core porn, I personally wouldnt get sucked in as they tend to go for the sex scenes rather then a story plot..... and it puts you off completely...

But everyone is entitled to their own opinion :)
