You will have all no doubt heard about the bushfires in my state, Victoria. I think I can speak for Scott too who has family virtually right in the middle of all of this devastation when I say that it is one of the saddest and most heart-wrenching events, if not *the* saddest to hit our shores.

Nobody was prepared for what was going to happen. We had the hottest day ever recorded - 46' and with winds in the bush blowing up to 100km's once the fires had begun, there was nothing that could stop them. The Firestorm rolled throughout the bushland that virtually surrounds Melbourne, taking out many in its path.

I have seen the grief this event has caused, a girl in my office Lezanne, her brother in law's family (mother, father and uncle) were lost in the fires. There names were Faye, Bill and Geoff Walker, I was lucky enough to have met them once when they came to the cricket, and once was enough to know just hot cute Faye and Bill were, and how completely awesome Geoff was. When he was a little boy he had a tumour removed from his back, the only way to know that the tumour would be completely removed was to severe part of his spine. He was left without the use of his legs, but he was a terrific man. It is just so tragic.

I only had $100 in my bank account a few days ago, but i have donated all of that to the Victorian Bushfire appeal, I have a roof over my head and my loved ones around me, which is much more than those affected by the fires. The company I work for, Spotless, has released a statement today saying that they will match, dollar for dollar any donations that we make as a deduction from our pay. I gave another $50 today, so I feel like im doing my bit.

Im sorry if this has turned into a mini-vent, I think to be honest with you, Im a little shocked and affected by what is going on. Looking at any of the photos of the bushland after the firestorm rolled through, particularly Kinglake, you can see just how hot the flames must have been, it literally looks like a modern day pompeii, or a scene from the aftershock of an atomic bomb movie.

What I wanted this topic to do was be a little virtual piece of writing that just says how sorry I am to everyone who has been affected, both directly and indirectly. And may God have mercy on the souls of the evil, evil people who deliberately lit the fires. Thank you so much for contributing so much to the death toll of the Victorian Bushfires.

It is very very sad Jen, thanks for posting this  So many families have been affected by this, it's tragic

My thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by this :(

Yeah, as Jen says.... I have family very central to this. After speaking to my mother the other day I can only say I/they are very lucky.

My parents and brother live in whittlesea. We have lived in and around there since before I was born (obviously i live in scotland now myself). I spent a lot of time at kinglake... whittlesea.... humevale.... upper plenty... really that whole area. I would say im not really a city person, I don't like groups... and I always saw myself settling down out there because of how beautiful and safe it makes me feel, such was the tranquility and calmness of the area.....

Anyhow.... I got an email at around midday our time here on the saturday from my aunty..... Which was weird in itself. It said just in case I heard it on the news and started to worry, my mum and dad were evacuated from whittlesea and are safe. At the time I just went... huh? And without looknig into it went on about my day.....

Then a while later I get an email from my mother, who says they have been told its safe to go back....

Anyhow... the day after its all over the news here and in the papers, turning my ignorance to what happened to utter shock and dismay...... Such a lovely area filled with lovely people......

I called my mother who fills in the blanks and makes me feel very lucky. We have a friend who is quite high up in our local CFA, he used to be our next door neighbour.... Anyhow.... around 430pm my mother gets a call from his wife telling her that her husband jusst called and said to get the hell out of whittlesea... In fact she was told they only had about 4 minutes before they would get hit by the fire.... My mother and brother, who were home, jumped in the car and drove into the city a bit more to my grandmothers..... The temperature gauge on my mothers car measuring outside temp...was 49 degrees c.

Apparently we were very lucky, because the wind changed... and the fire didn't enter the town. But to be honest... its hard to think past I was almost 4 minutes away from losing my mother and brother....

But enough about my side of things. So many people lost everything, including their homes, businesses and loved ones.... One of my best friends from school who I haven't seen in years lost his dad who was just about the nicest man I've ever met.... he was a sunday school teacher who was just a blast to be around... and also there home and business.... They left the property (orchard) in two cars..... the second car didn't make it. I went to school right in the middle of where the fires were...I have a grave feeling I'm going to know a lot of the people effected.....

Mum was telling me the other day that one of the ladies from her work had to take in some dental xrays of her husband so that it might help them identify him....

My best friend is in the SES (state emergency...um... someting lol) and is worknig in that area now...I don't know if I even want to ask him how its going up there... I don't think I want to know what hes seeing on a daily basis.

Anyhow...think I've gotten that off my chest too....

Gosh Scott, I'm glad your family is safe, must have/still be horrid for you. I can't imagine how scared you were for them.

It's an absolute tragedy, I cried when I heard the news. My Uncle and cousins live just outside Melbourne but they are fine, thank god. Wishing Australia and particularly Victoria peace and normality soon. Thoughts are with the families affected.
