SCOTLAND saw in the new year with a bang last night as tens of thousands of revellers joined the celebrations in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

About 100,000 people flocked to the capital for the Hogmanay party in Princes Street, which included performances from Texas, KT Tunstall and El Presidente against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. As the bells rang in 2006, eight tons of fireworks lit up the night sky across the city.

About 25,000 revellers attended events in Glasgow, with partygoers enjoying performances from Athlete, Hue and Cry and Deacon Blue. In Aberdeen 20,000 people turned out to see Liberty X, the Coral and the Proclaimers.

The start of 2006 in London was marked with a fireworks display at the London Eye. More than 100,000 people gathered in Trafalgar Square and the surrounding streets.

Celebrations in the capital were, however, marred by a Tube strike that threatened to cause chaos for revellers. Bob Crow, the general secretary of the RMT union, which had called the strike, suffered no personal inconvenience, however: he was sunning himself at a Red Sea resort.

Organisers of a New Year’s Day parade in London — which will have 10,000 performers from around the world — said that the strike was an “embarrassment” after the successful bid for the 2012 Olympic Games. Dan Kirkby, a spokesman for the parade, said: “London deserves better. There is no sign of the mayor and no one seems that bothered. London’s detractors will be having a bit of a giggle.”

Revellers from America, Australia, Japan and eastern Europe celebrated the start of 2006 in Edinburgh where extra security was on hand following last year’s terrorist bombings in London. However, police emphasised that there had been no specific threat to the Scottish capital.
