A woman police officer is in a serious condition in hospital after being shot as she investigated a burglary.
Rachael Bown, a 23-year-old probationary officer, underwent emergency surgery following the shooting, which happened in Nottingham shortly before midnight last night.
She and a male officer, who was not injured, had tried to stop a suspect who then opened fire. Pc Bown was wearing body armour but was still hit by a bullet in the abdomen.
She was taken to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, where her family were at her bedside, following the incident in Lenton Boulevard in the Lenton area.
Nottingham has been the scene of a number of fatal shootings that have shocked the nation.
Last year two gangland thugs were convicted of murdering innocent schoolgirl Danielle Beccan, 14, in a drive-by shooting in the city in October 2004.
And in September 2003, 64-year-old Nottingham jeweller Marian Bates was shot and killed during an armed raid.
Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent Marcus Beale said today: "Shortly before midnight last night we received a call of a burglary in the Lenton area of Nottingham.
"Two officers, an experienced male officer and a female probation officer Rachael Bown, were dispatched to that incident.
"Nearby they have sought a male suspect and that male suspect has produced a firearm and shot Rachael in the lower abdomen.
"Overnight she's undergone emergency surgery. Thankfully, in the early hours she was transferred into the intensive care unit where she remains in a serious but, I understand, stable condition.
