The cervix is the lower section (the 'neck') of the uterus, which protrudes into the vagina and dilates and effaces (widens and thins) during labor to allow the passage of your baby. The cervix is usually about 2cm long and has a small opening at the end - about the size of a pinhead - which will dilate (widen) and efface (thin) during labor. The cervix, while far back in the vagina, can be reached during an internal exam.
