Your blood pressure will be taken and recorded every time you visit the antenatal clinic. The term blood pressure relates to the pressure the flow of blood exerts against the walls of the arteries. The two figures in its measurement relate to the two beats of the heart - the systolic (when the heart contracts) and the diastolic (the pressure when the heart is at rest).

The reason why your blood pressure is regularly monitored while you are pregnant, is because it is a good indicator of a number of possible problems. An increase in blood pressure can be caused by stress and anxiety, or even hurrying to get to the antenatal clinic on time. However, an increase in blood pressure other than under these conditions might suggest that a pregnant woman is predisposed to a condition known as pre-eclampsia, which needs close monitoring.

Massage and aromatherapy can be extremely useful in lowering blood pressure, especially if massage is given regularly as the effects are cumulative. Both Camomile and Lavender essential oils have properties that lower blood pressure and have a calming effect.

NOTE- Before starting massage or aromatherapy, please seek someone qualified and make sure they are qualified to deal with pregnancy. Certain aromatherapy oils are considered risky during pregnancy.
